Prof. dr. Sierd Cloetingh

Sierd Cloetingh is Utrecht University Distinguished Professor, President of the Academia Europaea, and President of the European Cooperation in Science &Technology (COST). In addition, he is Editor-in-Chief of the international journal "Global and Planetary Change" and Chairman of the TOPO-EUROPE collaborative research program.

 

His research field is Earth Sciences. He published more than 335 papers in international peer-reviewed journals (11560 citations, h-index 59) and has been promotor of more than 75 PhD students of 18 different nationalities.

 

Past functions include Membership of the Scientific Council (2009-2015) and Vice-President of the European Research Council (ERC), President of the European Geophysical Society (1998-2000), President of the International Lithosphere Program (ILP), and Professor of the Royal Netherlands Academy for Arts and Sciences (KNAW, 2006-2015).

 

Sierd Cloetingh received honorary doctorates from five European universities and numerous medals and awards. He is member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, the Royal Norwegian Academy, the Royal Danish Academy, the German national Academy for Technical Sciences, the Heidelberg Academy, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He was distinguished in 2006 as Chevalier de Legion d'Honneur and in 2014 as Knight of the Royal Order of the Netherlands Lion for his contributions to science and European scientific cooperation in research and education.

Prof. dr. Patricia Osseweijer

Patricia Osseweijer is full professor and Leader of the Section Biotechnology and Society in the Department of Biotechnology, at the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the Delft University of Technology.

 

Her drive is to link technological innovation in biobased production with societal challenges to build a sustainable bioeconomy. Research interest focuses on integral impact assessment, with a focus on social sustainability, the role of values, trust and responsibility in achieving sustainability, stakeholder and public interaction, public opinion forming, novel designs of public communication and their relevance for policy making and ethics.

 

In 2015 she was awarded the Royal Academy of the Netherlands distinguished Lorentz fellowship for integrating social sciences and technology.

 

Patricia has a PhD in science communication (Free University Amsterdam) and a Masters degree in molecular biology (Utrecht University). From 2004-2013 she was Managing Director of the  Public-Private Partnership ‘Kluyver Centre for Genomics of Industrial Fermentation’  (100 MEuro) and Principal Investigator of the Centre for Society and Genomics. She initiated her own research Section in 2005 focusing on the link between technology innovation and societal embedding, which grew to 3 (ass) professors and 10-15 PhD and Postdoctoral students. In 2010 she became Flagship Manager of the 12 M Euro socio-economic programme (Societal embedding of a Sustainable Biobased Society) of the Public-Private Partnership BE-Basic, a government supported consortium of 120 M Euro which was extended with a chairmanship for the additional program “Economy, sustainability and policy”.

 

Patricia is Ambassador of TU Delft Brazil. Together with her colleague Luuk van der Wielen she led the development of an extensive collaborative program of research and education activities (4-5 MEuro/year), including a Dual Degree PhD program aiming for 100 Dual Degrees in 2025 and coordinates a series of advanced courses in addition to a broad portfolio of joint research projects. Her aim is to develop novel forms of education to reach more with higher efficiency, and she was co-initiator of the first Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) on Industrial Biotechnology (EdX platform, https://online-learning.tudelft.nl/courses/industrial-biotec).  She has organised and chaired many international conferences and expert meetings, is advisor to several industries, published over 100 articles, reports and papers and gave more than 120 presentations.
